A Letter from Senator Chuck Grassley:
Your Voice, Your Vote. You Decide.
What’s at Stake: The direction of the court and the country
2016 gives American voters a very rare opportunity.
In November, you will cast a ballot for a new President. Your votes will decide who leads the U.S. Congress. And for the first time in modern history, your vote can decide the direction of the U.S. Supreme Court.
A rare, unexpected vacancy was created by the sudden death of Justice Antonin Scalia just a few months before Election Day. Now the ideology of the Supreme Court hangs in the balance. As the New York Times reports, a third Obama appointment could “create the most liberal Supreme Court in 50 years.”
The Constitution splits the duties to determine who serves on the federal bench. Article 2, Section 2 divides the authority between the President and the U.S. Senate.
It’s called checks and balances.
Voters re-elected President Obama in 2012. And then they elected a Republican Senate majority in 2014.
I’m standing up to give you a voice in the choice. A lifetime appointment will shape our way of life for a generation or more — from religious freedom to the Second Amendment to life and liberty.
That’s why I am standing up to give you a say. On November 8, your vote will telegraph which direction you want America to go. A third Obama appointment would cement a liberal legacy that fosters the heavy hand of redistribution and regulation in America.
Is that the direction you want to go? You deserve the chance to say so on Election Day.
I’m standing strong for you. Will you stand with me?
