Branstad: Baucus Endorsement Spotlights Grassley’s “Extraordinary Ability” to Deliver for Iowa

WEST DES MOINES — Today, Terry Branstad, the longest-serving governor in U.S. history and former ambassador to China, released the statement below regarding his predecessor’s, Max Baucus, endorsement of Senator Chuck Grassley for re-election.

“This endorsement is meaningful for Iowa families and communities, big and small. It goes right to the heart of why Chuck Grassley’s work in the U.S. Senate is so valuable to us. Senator Baucus’ support spotlights Chuck Grassley’s extraordinary ability to craft and deliver legislative initiatives that transcend political boundaries and help all of us thrive and meet the challenges of modern life. It emphasizes the policy depth and practical application Senator Grassley puts to work for our state and our nation.

“Ambassador Baucus’ endorsement is based on first-hand experience with Senator Grassley in a narrowly divided Senate, in politically charged atmospheres, and looking out for rural America and hardworking families. This is the leader we know Chuck Grassley to be, and one of the many reasons why it’s so important we send him back to the Senate.”

In case you missed it:

Cedar Rapids Gazette: Touting Grassley’s endorsement from a Democrat, the campaign said Grassley has worked to get bipartisan bills signed into law. It noted the Lugar Center’s bipartisan index ranks Grassley 12th out of the U.S. senators in the most recent report for bipartisan cooperation.

POLITICO: Democrat Max Baucus is endorsing Republican Chuck Grassley in his reelection bid. It’s a rare bipartisan move in these polarizing times. Former Democratic Sen. Max Baucus (Mont.) endorsed Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley in his bid for reelection — a rare party crossover that’s only happened a handful of times in recent memory.

‘Too much partisanship’: Baucus, who served on the Senate Finance Committee with Grassley alternatively as chair and ranking member for a decade, called the Iowa Republican “a true public servant and friend” in a statement published by Grassley’s office — and emphasized a friendship that went beyond party ID.

Daily Caller: Retired six-term Democratic Montana Sen. Max Baucus endorsed Republican Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley for reelection on Wednesday, marking a rare instance of cross-partisan support. Iowans benefit tremendously from Chuck’s character, integrity, and work ethic. His commitment to work across the aisle is all the more valuable in a time of too much partisanship,” he continued.
