Grassley Works Campaign Calls on Mike Franken to Pull Down Inaccurate & Dishonest Ad
WEST DES MOINES — Grassley Works Campaign Manager Matt Dailer released the following statement regarding Mike Franken’s latest ad filled with lies and deception.
“We are calling on Mike Franken to immediately pull down his latest ad that’s chock-full of lies. The ad is provably false. Senator Chuck Grassley has supported and continues to support exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother, and he has affirmed multiple times that abortion should be a state issue. It’s disappointing Mike Franken is so willing to lie to Iowa voters. This is just the latest sign of desperation from his campaign. If he lies about basic facts, what else is he lying about?”
BACKGROUND:
Franken claims in his latest television ad that Grassley does not support exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother, and Grassley wants to ban abortion nationwide. Grassley has affirmed multiple times that he believes abortion should be a state issue.
Franken’s source for this inaccurate claim actually proves Grassley is on record supporting exceptions. S. 2311, The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, includes exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother.
Additionally, the Dobbs v. Jackson Amicus Brief cited in the advertisement was written in support of the Mississippi statute, which allowed abortion for any reason up to 15 weeks and provided exceptions for the life of the mother after 15 weeks. This again shows that Grassley is on record supporting exceptions.
Since 1976, Sen. Grassley has fought for the inclusion of the Hyde Amendment in annual spending bills and has voted for it dozens of times. The Hyde amendment restricts federal dollars from paying for abortion, but the restriction does not apply to abortions of pregnancies that are the result of rape or incest “rape or incest exception” and life of the mother “life-saving exception.”
Grassley voted in 2007 for an amendment (S.Amdt. 3330 to H.R. 3043) to bar use of federal resources for grants to organizations that perform abortions, with exceptions for maternal health.
