U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley says he’ll make a decision about reelection this fall
Republican U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley said Wednesday he expects to make a decision about whether to seek reelection “sometime in September, October or November” of this year.
“That’s plenty of time to make up my mind,” he said on a call with reporters. “And in the meantime, I’ve got a job working for Iowans. I love my work. I’m working hard.”
Previously, he had said a decision might be coming within “several weeks.”
Grassley has been at the center of growing speculation as Iowa Republicans and Democrats alike wonder whether the 87-year-old senator will seek an eighth term in office.
Those questions have only grown more pronounced as other Republican senators announce they will not seek re-election, potentially creating openings for Democrats who would not have to run against incumbents. They include Sens. Rob Portman of Ohio, Richard Burr of North Carolina and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.
